BANANA FEEDING PROJECT TO BE LAUNCHED IN DAVAO
Banana exporters of the Davao Region will embark on a milestone project dubbed as Banana Feeding Program for children in public schools and day care centers. This was bared by Ireneo Dalayon, FEDCO President and Manager. Target areas for its initial implementation is in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley. The project is conceptualized owing to the fact that excess quality but non-exportable Cavendish bananas are just left at the packing plants of banana exporters.
FEDCO is a secondary cooperative situated in Region XI that have banana growers’ cooperatives as members, mostly from these areas. About ten percent (10%) of the bananas exported to importing countries are classified as rejects. With the quality of the bananas left unsold, Mr. Dalayon said that these can be used for the feeding program in support to the program of government.
Talks have been conducted with concerned government insitutitonsto discuss the mechanics of a joint undertaking with the private banana growers. The idea was considered noteworthy having to prepare various banana recipes which children love to taste apart from the fresh bananas to be offered. The nutritional value of the product is remarkable that it would certainly warrant acceptance of the cooperators and likeness of the intended beneficiaries.
The project will be launched during the Banana Conference (BANCON) 2017 to be held on October 12-13, 2017 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, J. P. Laurel, this city. The same will form as a social corporate responsibility undertaking among the banana sector group. Further, the project is to be jointly implement with the Philippine Exporters Confederation Region XI Davao Chapter, Inc. (PHILEXPORT Davao). /msl
